How to Measure the Embossing Size on a Napkin or Tissue

Embossing is an important part of napkin and tissue production. Different embossing patterns not only affect the appearance of the finished product but may also influence the selection and customization of the embossing rollers used on a napkin tissue machine.

When customers need a customized embossing pattern, providing accurate dimensions is very important. In this guide, we will show you a simple way to measure the embossing size of a napkin or tissue using two rulers.

What You Need

You only need:

• Two straight rulers with clear millimeter markings
• One napkin or tissue sample with a complete embossing pattern

Place the two rulers at a 90-degree angle, as shown in the image above.

Step 1: Prepare the Napkin and Rulers

Lay the napkin or tissue flat on a clean surface.

Choose a clear and complete embossing pattern that is easy to identify. Avoid measuring a damaged, folded, or incomplete pattern, as this may result in inaccurate dimensions.

Position the two rulers at a 90-degree angle to form an L-shape.

Step 2: Position the Rulers Correctly

Align the zero marks of the two rulers as closely as possible.

Place the rulers next to the embossing pattern so that one ruler measures the horizontal direction and the other measures the vertical direction.

Make sure the rulers are flat and close to the surface of the napkin.

Step 3: Measure the Width and Height

Read the dimensions of the complete embossing pattern in both directions:

Width: Measure from the left edge to the right edge of the embossing pattern.

Height: Measure from the bottom edge to the top edge of the embossing pattern.

For example, the embossing pattern shown in our illustration measures approximately:

2.0 cm × 2.0 cm

When sending the measurement to your napkin machine or embossing roller supplier, we recommend specifying the dimensions clearly as Width × Height.

Why Is Accurate Embossing Measurement Important?

For napkin production, embossing patterns can vary considerably in size, shape, spacing, and design. Accurate measurements help the machine manufacturer better understand the customer's existing product and determine the appropriate embossing solution.

This is particularly important when you need to:

• Customize a new embossing roller
• Reproduce or develop a similar embossing effect
• Confirm whether an existing embossing unit is suitable
• Produce napkins according to a specific finished-product requirement

However, the pattern size alone may not always be sufficient for embossing roller customization. Depending on the project, the manufacturer may also need information such as the napkin size, paper GSM, number of plies, embossing pattern spacing, embossing area, and a physical sample or clear high-resolution photos.

Tips for More Accurate Measurement

Always select a complete and clearly visible embossing pattern. Keep the napkin flat and avoid stretching or compressing the paper while measuring.

For small patterns, use rulers with 1 mm graduations and take a close-up photo showing both the embossing pattern and ruler markings. This makes it much easier for the machine manufacturer to verify the dimensions.

If possible, measure the same pattern several times and confirm that the results are consistent.
